NIGERWIVES NIGERIA - LAGOS STATE BRANCH
2019 ANNUAL REPORT
By President: Mrs.Lorna OPANUBI
The year 2019 was a very important one for us in Lagos, as we were to host the AGM and also celebrate the 40th Anniversary of Nigerwives-Nigeria. It would be recalled that the AGM date had to be shifted from March to May as a result of the Nigerian National Elections scheduled for February-March 2019.
As at January 2019, the Lagos Branch Executive Committee comprised the following:
1. Lorna OPANUBI President
2. Ghanaughn Brown Vice President
3. Sherese Ijewere Secretary
4. Amelia Nwankwo Ass. Secretary
5. Chris Achimu Treasurer
The Executive Committee was enlarged to accommodate Sub-Committees handling various aspects of the preparations. Three members of the National Executive Committee, also Lagos Branch members, were co-opted so as to maintain close contact with the National Exco. Sub-Committees were as follows:
-
Accommodation
-
Transport
-
Finance
-

The enlarged Exco held weekly meetings, generally on Tuesdays, at the home of our Secretary in Ikoyi. It was not an easy task given the perennial “hold-up” Lagos is known for, and the distance to Ikoyi from the mainland and from Lekki. However, we all took it in our stride since our goal was the achievement of our objective. As was expected, there were disagreements and flared tempers once in a while. In the end, we were on the same page and were all on ground to welcome delegates and observers from other Branches.
The weekend of May 17 – 19 finally came! Thanks to Uber, transport from the airport to Ikoyi went smoothly. The Welcoming Team was at the Hotel Bon Voyage to register and take care of those arriving. There was a flurry of activities punctuated by hugs and laughter. Several meetings were held in the evening of Friday 17. The AGM was held on Saturday 18 from about 9.00 am. After the AGM we got ready to attend the 40th Anniversary Dinner. In spite of some hitches due to overcrowding of the reception hall, we had a good time. The open space by the swimming pool offered soothing breeze from the lagoon and the band provided music for some dancing. On Sunday 19 we bade farewell to our guests. Again, Uber did the conveying to the airport. All of us in Lagos Branch heaved a sigh of relief when safe arrivals at various destinations were reported.
The remaining part of 2019 went smoothly. We held our regular meetings on the first Saturday of every month. Funds obtained from our raffle sales went to our Welfare Committee, which provides Christmas gifts to deserving members among other donations. The year was rounded up with a Christmas Luncheon in Ikeja.
