NIGERWIVES NIGERIA - LAGOS BRANCH
2017 ANNUAL REPORT
By President: Mrs.Lorna OPANUBI
PREAMBLE: We are grateful in Lagos Branch to have held elections on February 3 this year, 2018, and elected a new Executive Committee. After our elections in 2017 we had a bit of upheaval as our President had to resign due to ill-health and I, as Vice-President, took up the baton to keep our Association going. Thanks to the support of all members we were able to sail through.
MEMBERSHIP
Lagos Branch has been growing steadily with an average of four new members per meeting. They are mostly young, upwardly mobile ladies from various countries. As at December 2017 our paid-up members numbered 70 but some members are still paying their 2017 dues. We have over 100 registered ones on our Membership list.
MEETINGS
Our Monthly General Meetings are held on the first Saturday of every month at Corona School, Mekunwen Street, Ikoyi. The average attendance is 45-50. Because of the peculiarity of Lagos, the city is divided into 4 Areas, namely Mainland (including Ikeja, Surulere, Gbagada, Ogudu, Yaba, and Festac), Ikoyi/Victoria Island, Lekki Phase I, Lekki/VGC/Ajah. Each Area in turn holds monthly or bi-monthly meetings. There is more interaction among members of these various Areas.
ACTIVITIES
We have activities at every General Meeting. These include Easter Egg Hunt, making of greeting cards, guest lecturer or guest demonstrating a new product, etc. We had our Annual Christmas Party organized by Mainland Area. We also participated in the Small World event held every February and the proceeds totaling over 1 million Naira were donated to the Braille Centre who made Braille Kits for Primary and Secondary School blind pupils and students. Some National and Lagos Exco members accompanied the Braille Centre Coordinator, Trustee Jean Obi, to distribute these Math Kits to recipients in Kings’ College in V.I., Pacelli School for the Blind in Surulere, Federal Government College in Ijanikin, and the School for the Blind in Agbowa, Ikorodu. We are sending pictures of these mentioned activities.
WELFARE
Two of our members experienced very serious fire incidents in their homes. One of them lost everything! We were able to offer them the necessary help and comfort. We were not made aware of any newborn but, sadly, we lost husbands of two of our members. We rallied round to give our bereaved sisters the necessary support. We visited some of our members who were ill and brought them flowers. At Christmas time we gave hampers to some members and also to some staff of the Braille Centre.
